Success Stories

How do you spell success?

Too often we use our time to complain about schooling, students, administrators, the school system, etc. etc. Please post something that you learned which I call “Success Stories” because our mistakes and what we learn from them in teaching – and our willingness to talk about them – are something to celebrate and feel successful about.

I recall one of my students who like the rest of us, was feeling overwhelmed with all the demands of teaching. With everything else he had to do, in walks what appeared to him to be a “problem student.” He grumbled, complained to peers in the teacher’s lounge, and approached the student with a negative attitude.  Once the day began, he was completely surprised about her performance and seriousness as a student. His assumptions about her ended up being totally the opposite of what he thought. She brought much to his learning and ultimately to his teaching. Now that’s s-u-c-c-e-s-s!

Can you think of a time when you reframed your thinking about a student and your teaching?
